PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is a generic term for fluorinated chemicals, which also include e.g. PTFE, PFC and PFOA. PFAS have many advantages such as water-repellent properties, heat and pressure resistance. That is why they are attractive for industrially manufactured products and for functional clothing. But PFAS are also called \"forever chemicals\" because they are not biodegradable or only biodegradable within incalculable periods of thousands of years. Thus, they not only pollute the environment, but also get back into the human body via food and drinking water, with potentially serious health consequences.   Airmap, on the other hand, is PFAS-free. It is a single-layer polyurethane membrane that is elastic and robust, but has limited breathability.
