Cassettes for the ideal gear ratio
Gear ratios
The cassette determines the ratios of the gear system. A cassette with a larger largest sprocket makes climbing easier, while a smaller sprocket on the highest gear provides more top speed on flat roads. The ratio between the smallest and largest sprocket is called the spread.
Number of gears
Cassettes are available in 7- to 12-speed versions. The number of gears must match the rear derailleur and shifter. An 11-speed cassette has narrower spacing between sprockets than an 8-speed cassette, requiring a specific chain.
Material and weight
Cassettes are made from steel, aluminum, or a combination. Steel sprockets are durable and affordable. Aluminum sprockets are lighter but wear faster. On road bikes, cassettes with a spider construction are often used to save weight.
Compatibility
The cassette must be compatible with the wheel hub. The hub has splines on which the cassette is mounted. Common standards are Shimano HG, SRAM XD, and SRAM XDR. Check the hub standard before buying a cassette. The chain must also be compatible.
A worn chain can damage the cassette. Replace the chain promptly to extend cassette life. Use grease for smooth operation and brake cleaner for cleaning.
