Reusable versus single-use

Chain links are available as reusable or single-use quick links. Reusable links can be opened and closed multiple times, useful for regular cleaning of the chain. Single-use links are intended for one-time use and must be replaced after opening.

Compatibility per number of gears

The width of a chain link varies by number of gears, just like the chain itself. An 11-speed link is narrower than an 8-speed link. Quick links are available for 7- to 12-speed chains. Check the number of gears of the cassette for the right choice.

Usage

A chain link allows a chain to be opened and closed without tools. This is useful for cleaning the chain, replacing a worn chain, or repairing a broken chain by the road. Mounting a link requires no special tools.

Maintenance

After cleaning the chain with chain spray, the chain link can be re-closed (if reusable) or replaced (if single-use). Lubricate the chain after cleaning with chain grease for smooth operation through the derailleur.

A spare chain link is a small but essential part for the road. Combine with a mini pump and spare tire for a complete roadside kit. Also check the cassette for wear.
