Technical sprays for bike maintenance

Penetrating oil

The most commonly used technical spray in the bike workshop is penetrating oil, also called release oil. This is a thin-bodied oil that penetrates deep into threaded connections through capillary action to break down rust, oxide layers and hardened grease. Stuck bolts, nuts and screws that have been exposed to rain, sand and salt for years can be loosened again without damaging the thread or the head. Penetrating oil forms a temporary protective layer after loosening that slows new rust formation, but is not a permanent lubricant and must be supplemented with grease or paste.

Zinc spray

Zinc spray is used where metal needs protection against rust and corrosion. After sanding or painting damaged frames, carriers, brackets or other metal bike parts, zinc spray forms a catalytic zinc layer that acts as a sacrificial anode. The zinc sacrifices itself instead of the underlying steel, extending the life of the construction. Zinc spray adheres well to bare, lightly oxidised or sanded metal surfaces and withstands weather, moisture and temperature fluctuations.

Brake cleaner

Brake cleaner is a powerful, fast-evaporating solvent that removes oil, grease, brake dust, rubber residue and other contaminants from brake surfaces, brake pads, disc brake pads and brake pistons. A clean brake surface is essential for optimal braking power, preventing brake noise such as squeaking and grinding, and safe operation of the braking system. Brake cleaner leaves no residue, allowing the brake to function fully immediately after cleaning.

Contact cleaner and chain spray

Contact cleaner is used for cleaning electrical contacts, switches and sensor connections. On bikes with electronic shifting systems, contacts can develop oxidative deposits from moisture and dirt, leading to shifting problems or malfunctions. Contact cleaner removes these deposits and restores electrical conductivity.

Chain spray is a specific spray for cleaning and lubricating the bike chain. Cleaning variants flush old grease, sand and grime from the chain links. Lubricating variants apply a new lubricant that reduces friction between chain, cassette and chainrings. A clean, well-lubricated chain runs smoother and wears significantly slower.
