Stems for the ideal riding position

Stem function

The stem connects the handlebar to the fork and determines height and reach relative to the saddle. A shorter stem provides more direct steering response, a longer stem gives a more stretched position.

Length and angle

Stem length ranges from 40 to 130 mm and affects riding position. The angle can raise or lower the handlebar. An angled stem is useful for city bikes where a more upright position is desired. Road bikes often use a straight, short stem.

Materials

Stems are available in aluminum and carbon fiber. Aluminum is sturdy and affordable. Carbon fiber is lighter and dampens vibrations. The choice depends on bike type and desired weight. Road bikes often use carbon fiber stems.

Diameters and compatibility

Stems have two key measurements: handlebar clamp diameter and steerer tube diameter. Common handlebar diameters are 25.4 mm, 31.8 mm, and 35 mm. The steerer diameter must fit the fork. Check both before buying. The handlebar and grips must also be compatible.

A good stem ensures a comfortable position and direct steering response. When adjusting position, the saddle and handlebar shape are also relevant. Use carbon assembly paste with carbon components.
