Folding bikes for flexible mobility
Hinge systems
Folding bikes use different hinge systems to fold the frame. The most common system is a mid-frame hinge that folds the frame in half, bringing the wheels side by side. Some models use a hinge on the stem to fold the handlebars down. The hinges are equipped with a safety lock that prevents unintentional unfolding while riding. The folding system determines how compactly the bike can be folded and how quickly folding goes.
Wheel sizes
Folding bikes are available with different wheel sizes. 16-inch wheels make the bike very compact when folded, ideal for train and metro, but ride somewhat less comfortably on uneven road surfaces. 20-inch wheels offer a better balance between compactness and riding comfort. Some folding bikes have 24-inch or 26-inch wheels for riding comfort comparable to a regular bicycle, but are less compact when folded. The tires on folding bikes are often narrow with low rolling resistance.
Gears
Folding bikes are equipped with different gear systems. Hub gears with 3 to 8 gears are popular due to low maintenance requirements and the enclosed construction. Derailleur gears with a rear derailleur and cassette offer more gear ratios, typically 9 to 11 speed, for precise shifting performance. The chain often runs in a partial chain guard to keep clothing clean.
Portability and weight
The weight of a folding bike is an important factor because the bike is regularly carried. Aluminum frames keep the weight low, while carbon fiber frames are even lighter. The folded size determines whether the bike can be taken on public transport or transported in a bicycle bag. A kickstand is handy when folding. Bicycle locks can be carried on the bike for use at the destination.
Maintenance of a folding bike is comparable to that of a regular bicycle. The hinge should be regularly lubricated with grease, and the chain requires periodic cleaning and lubrication. Tires and valves should be checked for correct pressure with a bicycle pump. Lighting is important for visibility in traffic.
