Bicycle chains for every gear
Chain width and number of gears
Bicycle chains are available in different widths, matched to the number of gears. An 11-speed chain is narrower than an 8-speed chain because the cassette sprockets are closer together. The correct number of gears is essential for smooth shifting via the derailleur.
Wear and chain checker
The bicycle chain is subject to wear. A worn chain can damage the cassette and chainrings, making timely replacement important. A chain checker measures chain stretch and indicates when replacement is needed.
Quality levels
Chains are available in different quality levels. Entry-level models are made of steel and are affordable. High-end racing chains have special coatings for reduced friction and are lighter. The choice depends on the bike type: road bikes use lighter chains, city bikes a more durable one.
Quick link
Many chains come with a quick link for easy assembly and disassembly. A quick link allows the chain to be opened without tools, useful for cleaning or replacement. Lubricate the chain with chain grease after cleaning.
For a smooth drivetrain, chain and cassette must be in good condition. Clean the chain with chain spray and lubricate with grease. Also check the rear derailleur adjustment.
