City bikes for daily use

Comfort and riding position

City bikes are designed with an upright riding position that reduces pressure on the neck, shoulders, and hands. The handlebars are higher and wider than on a road bike, often with a raised shape. The saddle is wider and more cushioned for comfort on short to medium distances. The stem can be adjusted to further fine-tune the riding position. Ergonomic grips distribute pressure over a larger surface.

Hub gears versus derailleur gears

City bikes are equipped with either a hub gear or a derailleur gear. Hub gears, typically 3 to 8 gears, are built into the rear hub and require little maintenance because they are shielded from dirt and weather. The chain runs in a chain guard that keeps dirt and water out. Derailleur gears with a rear derailleur and cassette offer more gear ratios but are more susceptible to wear and require more maintenance.

Standard equipment

City bikes are often supplied as standard with mudguards, a chain guard, a rear rack, kickstand, and bicycle lighting. These features make the bike immediately suitable for daily use. Bicycle bags or a bicycle basket can be mounted on the rack for extra carrying capacity. A bicycle lock is essential when parking in the city.

Tires and wheels

City bikes roll on wider tires than road bikes, typically 35 to 47 mm wide, for more comfort and grip on uneven city surfaces. Tires with an anti-puncture layer reduce the risk of flat tires from glass and gravel. The wheels are robustly built for daily use and sometimes equipped with a coaster brake hub for low-maintenance braking power. A floor pump with pressure gauge is needed to regularly check the tire pressure.

For extra safety in city traffic, a bicycle bell and good lighting are important. Bicycle helmets provide protection in a fall. Those who cycle with children can mount a child bike seat or bicycle trailer. For regular maintenance, greases and technical sprays are useful.
