Presta valve (French valve)
The Presta valve is the most common valve on road bikes and mountain bikes. It is a narrow valve with a screw cap that must be manually opened and closed. Presta valves are available in different lengths, with deep rim profiles requiring a longer valve. The small rim drill diameter makes this valve suitable for narrow rims.
Schrader valve (American valve)
The Schrader valve is the same valve used on cars and is common on city bikes and children's bikes. It is more robust than the Presta valve and has a spring that automatically closes the valve. Schrader valves fit wider rims and are compatible with standard car pumps.
Dunlop valve (German valve)
The Dunlop valve, also called Woods valve, is found on older and traditional city bikes. It has a rubber inner valve that is slid over the valve body. Dunlop valves are less common on modern bikes but are still sold for replacement on older models.
Valve extenders
For rims with a high profile, such as aerodynamic wheelsets on road bikes, the Presta valve may be too short to reach the pump head. A valve extender is screwed onto the existing valve to increase the length. It is important to choose the correct diameter and thread.
