Children's bikes for every age
Wheel sizes and age
Children's bikes are classified by wheel size rather than frame height. A 12-inch bike is intended for children aged 2 to 4 who are just learning to ride, often without pedals as a balance bike. 16-inch is suitable for ages 4 to 6, 20-inch for ages 6 to 9, and 24-inch for ages 9 to 12. Within these sizes, there are separate models for girls' bikes and boys' bikes, with differences in frame shape and color.
Step-through and frame design
A low step-through is an important feature of children's bikes. The frame is designed so that the child can get on and off without stepping over the top tube. This increases confidence and reduces the risk of falling when mounting and dismounting. The frame is often reinforced to withstand falls and bumps. The saddle is adapted to smaller hips and can be adjusted in height with a seatpost clamp as the child grows.
Brakes and safety
Children's bikes are often equipped with a coaster brake as the primary brake, since it is easy to operate for young children who do not yet have the hand strength for hand brakes. On older children's bikes (20-inch and larger), hand brakes are added, often with brake levers that are specifically adapted to smaller hands. A bicycle helmet is essential for safety.
Lighting and accessories
For visibility in traffic, front and rear lights are important, also on children's bikes. Many models come standard with mudguards and a chain guard. A kickstand makes parking easier. Bicycle bells are legally required and help children alert other road users. For extra carrying capacity, a bicycle basket can be mounted.
As a child grows, parts can be replaced. The tires wear through use and need to be replaced, and the chain requires regular lubrication with chain grease. A bicycle pump at home ensures that tire pressure is always at the right level. Also check out the children's helmets for optimal safety.
