Chain guards for a clean bicycle

Full versus partial chain guards

A chain guard protects the chain against dirt, water, and dust, extending drivetrain life. Full chain guards enclose the entire chain for maximum protection, ideal for city bikes. Partial guards protect only the upper section and are lighter.

Materials

Chain guards are available in plastic and steel. Plastic is light and rust-free, steel is sturdier but heavier. The size must fit the wheel size and number of cassette teeth. A good fit prevents the chain from rubbing against the guard.

Drivetrain benefits

A chain guard prevents oil from getting on your clothes and keeps the chain clean. A clean chain wears slower and needs less frequent lubrication with grease. The rear derailleur also stays cleaner, improving shifting.

Compatibility

The chain guard must be compatible with the frame and rack of the bike. Some city bikes have a mount on the frame, others use a separate bracket. Check chain clearance within the guard to prevent rubbing.

For complete drivetrain protection on city bikes, a chain guard is essential. Combine with mudguards for maximum weather protection.
