Road versus MTB brake levers

For road bikes, there are lightweight brake levers with an aerodynamic profile mounted on the drop handlebars. Mountain bikes have wider brake levers that offer a good grip even on rough terrain. City bikes often have a brake lever with a comfortable shape for daily use.

Adjustable reach

Many brake levers feature adjustable reach, allowing the grip to be adapted to hand size. This is especially important for children's bikes and riders with small hands. Reach is adjusted with an Allen key or a dial on the brake lever.

Hydraulic versus mechanical levers

Mechanical brake levers use brake cables for force transmission. Hydraulic brake levers contain a piston that pushes hydraulic fluid through the hose. Hydraulic levers offer more braking power and finer control. Check which type of brake is on your bicycle.

Compatibility

Brake levers must be compatible with the brake type on the bicycle. A lever for a hydraulic disc brake will not work with a mechanical rim brake. Also check compatibility with the handlebars and grips or handlebar tape.
