Chain width and number of gears

Bicycle chains are available in different widths, matched to the number of gears. An 11-speed chain is narrower than an 8-speed chain because the cassette sprockets are closer together. The correct number of gears is essential for smooth shifting via the derailleur.

Wear and chain checker

The bicycle chain is subject to wear. A worn chain can damage the cassette and chainrings, making timely replacement important. A chain checker measures chain stretch and indicates when replacement is needed.

Quality levels
