Kids bike sizes: choosing the right wheel size

A kids bike in the right size is important for safety and confidence. A bike that's too big is hard to control, one that's too small is uncomfortable. Here we explain how to choose the perfect kids bike.

Kids bike sizes: it's all about wheel size

Unlike adult bikes, kids bikes are not indicated by frame size but by wheel size. The wheel size determines the overall height of the bike and whether your child can reach safely.

Wheel size is expressed in inches: 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch, 20 inch, 24 inch and 26 inch. The bigger the wheels, the bigger the bike.

Which wheel size for which age?

The following chart provides a guideline for choosing the right wheel size based on age and leg length:

  • 12 inch: 2-4 years, leg length 35-43 cm
  • 14 inch: 3-5 years, leg length 40-48 cm
  • 16 inch: 4-6 years, leg length 45-53 cm
  • 18 inch: 5-7 years, leg length 50-58 cm
  • 20 inch: 6-9 years, leg length 55-66 cm
  • 24 inch: 8-12 years, leg length 65-80 cm
  • 26 inch: 10+ years, leg length 75+ cm (transition to adult bike)

How to measure the right size for your child

Leg length is the most important measurement for a kids bike. Here's how to measure it:

  1. Have your child stand barefoot with their back against a wall.
  2. Place a book firmly between their legs.
  3. Measure from the top of the book to the floor.
  4. Compare the measured value with the chart above.

The child must be able to stand with both feet flat on the ground when sitting on the saddle. This is crucial for safety and confidence.

Tips for buying a kids bike

1. Allow room to grow: Children grow fast. A bike they can just reach will be too small next year. Choose a bike where your child has some room but can still safely reach the ground.

2. Watch the weight: A lightweight bike is easier to control for children. Heavy bikes are tiring and can be discouraging.

3. Brakes are crucial: Choose a bike with good brakes that can be operated by small hands. Coaster brakes are often easier for young children than hand brakes.

4. Stability: For the youngest children, balance bikes are a good preparation for a bike with pedals.

When to switch to an adult bike?

Around age 10-12, children can transition to a bike with 26 inch wheels, which is the smallest adult size. From that point, frame size becomes more important than wheel size.

A 26 inch bike is the perfect transition for many children. Pay attention to frame size: a 26 inch bike with a low step-through is ideal for younger riders not yet ready for a large frame.
