What is a quick release?
A quick release is a lever mechanism that lets you remove and secure a wheel without tools. You flip the lever open, unscrew it a few turns, and the wheel comes off. Quick and easy.
Quick releases have been used for decades and are standard on many city bikes, touring bikes and entry-level models. The axle has a diameter of about 9-10 mm and is clamped by the lever force of the release.
What is a thru-axle?
A thru-axle is a thick axle that runs through the entire hub of the wheel and screws into the fork on both sides. You need an Allen key or special lever to loosen it.
Thru-axles have a larger diameter (12-15 mm for rear wheels, 12 mm for front wheels) and provide a stiffer connection between wheel and frame. This system originated in mountain biking and is increasingly used on all bike types.
