Bicycle tires for every application
Tire types and treads
Bicycle tires are distinguished by tread and application. Slicks or semi-slicks have little to no tread and are suitable for road bikes and city bikes on paved roads. Tires with tread offer more grip on loose surfaces and are used on mountain bikes and gravel bikes. The wheels determine which tire size fits.
Tire pressure and rolling resistance
Tire pressure directly affects ride comfort and rolling resistance. High pressure (6-8 bar) gives less rolling resistance on paved roads, ideal for road bikes. Lower pressure (2-4 bar) offers more comfort and grip on uneven terrain. Correct pressure is set with a bicycle pump with pressure gauge, via the valve.
Puncture protection
Many modern tires feature an anti-puncture layer that significantly reduces the risk of flat tires from glass, thorns, and gravel. The thickness and quality of the puncture protection layer varies by model. For city bikes and commuter bikes, puncture protection is an important factor. A spare inner tube and a mini pump are essential on the road.
Tubeless versus inner tube
Tubeless tires are becoming increasingly popular, especially on mountain bikes and gravel bikes. Without an inner tube, the tire can be run at lower pressure for more grip, and small punctures are automatically sealed by the tubeless fluid. Tires with inner tubes are easier to mount and repair. With both systems, correct valve compatibility with the rim is important.
Tire wear is a natural phenomenon that depends on surface, riding style, and mileage. A worn tire has less tread and is more susceptible to punctures. Regularly check tire pressure with a bicycle pump. For safe braking, brake pads and disc brake pads must be in good condition.
