E-bike mid-drive vs hub motor: which type is right for you?
When choosing an e-bike, you face an important decision: mid-drive motor or front hub motor? Both systems have their own advantages. In this guide we compare them on all essential points.
What is a mid-drive motor?
A mid-drive motor is placed at the bottom bracket, in the center of the bike. The motor delivers its power directly to the crank, providing a natural pedaling experience. Well-known brands include Bosch, Shimano STEPS and Brose.
The mid-drive motor uses the bike's gears, making the motor more efficient in hills and headwinds. The center of gravity is low and central, which benefits handling.
What is a front hub motor?
A front hub motor sits in the hub of the front wheel. The motor pulls the bike forward, similar to a car engine in the front. Hub motors have a simpler construction and are therefore cheaper.
A front hub motor works independently of the crank and gears. You can ride almost silently without pedaling (using the throttle), which some riders find pleasant.
Comparison: mid-drive vs hub motor
| Feature | Mid-drive motor | Front hub motor |
|---|---|---|
| Motor position | Center (at bottom bracket) | Front wheel hub |
| Pedal feel | Natural, responsive | Independent of pedaling |
| Torque / power | High (up to 90 Nm) | Moderate (up to 35 Nm) |
| Efficiency in hills | Excellent (uses gears) | Limited (fixed ratio) |
| Maintenance | More complex, more expensive | Simple, cheaper |
| Price | Higher (premium segment) | Lower (entry segment) |
Pros and cons at a glance
Mid-drive advantages:
- Natural pedal feel
- High power and torque
- Good handling due to low center of gravity
- Efficient in hills and headwinds
Mid-drive disadvantages:
- More expensive to buy and maintain
- More wear on chain and cassette
- More complex system
Front hub motor advantages:
- Cheaper to buy
- Simple maintenance
- Less wear on drivetrain
- Riding without pedaling possible
Front hub motor disadvantages:
- Less natural pedal feel
- Limited power in hills
- Heavier steering due to weight on front wheel
Which motor suits which use?
Choose a mid-drive motor if:
- You cycle a lot in hilly terrain
- You ride long distances
- A natural pedal feel is important to you
- You want a premium e-bike with maximum support
Choose a front hub motor if:
- You mainly cycle on flat terrain
- You want an affordable e-bike
- Simple maintenance is important
- You use the bike mainly for short trips
Maintenance and battery
Regardless of motor type, the battery is an important component. Battery capacity is expressed in watt-hours (Wh). A larger battery gives more range but is also heavier.
For daily commuting, a 400-500 Wh battery is usually sufficient. For long rides, consider a 500-625 Wh battery. Make sure to charge the battery regularly and don't leave it empty for long periods.

Frequently asked questions
Which motor is better in hills?
The mid-drive motor is clearly superior in hills. Because the motor uses the gears, it delivers more power at low speeds. A hub motor has a fixed ratio and can struggle on steep hills.
Is a hub motor worse than a mid-drive?
Not necessarily. A hub motor is simpler, cheaper and requires less maintenance. For flat terrain and short distances, a hub motor is an excellent choice. It depends on your usage.
Can I ride without pedaling on an e-bike?
With a front hub motor, you can often ride without pedaling using the throttle (up to 6 km/h). With a mid-drive motor, assistance only works when you pedal. In both cases, the motor only assists, it doesn't fully drive the bike.
How long does an e-bike battery last?
A battery lasts an average of 500-1000 charge cycles, equivalent to 3-5 years of normal use. Range per charge is typically 40-120 km, depending on capacity, support level and terrain.
