Food forests are very popular because they contribute to sustainable food production. They have high biodiversity and enrich the soil; they are completely self-sufficient and climate-resilient. Pioneers in the field of food forests have already shown that their plots yielded more healthy produce at lower costs. Food forests thus form a valuable alternative to conventional agriculture. This book is the ideal source of knowledge and inspiration for anyone who wants to create a professional food forest. This book is interesting for owners and/or managers of nature reserves or forest plots, private land or estate owners, forest and nature managers, civil servants, farmers, gardeners and permaculturists. "Anyone who wants to get started in their own green area will find a wonderful source of inspiration in this book." - Taco Blom, Permaculture School Netherlands The book contains a wealth of background information and provides valuable tips on ecology and landscape, animal life, management, yield and much more. Broad background information Designing, planning and planting a food forest Useful lists and tips 18 example projects including maps and plant lists With separate plant guide with 250 edible species Beautifully illustrated From the press ''Very inspiring and diverse!'' - eigenwijsblij Madelon Oostwoud is a designer and garden author. She has been growing vegetables, fruit and herbs for years in the postage stamp garden behind her house. She has a food forest in North Holland, gives lectures and workshops and writes for garden magazines. Madelon previously wrote the bestseller "A small edible garden with perennials" >> which was nominated for the Jan Wolkers Book Prize 2016. Food forests are sustainable plantings in which, through a targeted, very diverse plant selection and optimal use of the different layer structure that a forest has, edible plants can be continuously harvested. The principle, the construction and the management of this form of sustainable food production are extensively explained in this book, including descriptions of a number of already realized projects. Furthermore, many practical tips and facts are included. The appendix includes (web) addresses, plant lists and a glossary/index. A plant guide with over 250 edible plants is included as a separate booklet. The book, written in an enthusiastic tone, is illustrated with photos and drawings (including maps!) in color. The reader who, professionally or out of interest, is interested in this form of agriculture, will certainly be inspired by this book. including descriptions of a number of already realized projects. Furthermore, many practical tips and facts are included. The book is illustrated with photos and drawings (including maps!) in color. Product specifications Book Food Forest Article description Book Food Forest Article number 9789050116534 Price Country of origin The Netherlands Interview with the author: Madelon Oostwoud My inspiration to write the book was all those small gardens that people don't know what to do with and for which they often don't choose the right plants. While you can make a paradise out of a small garden! Think of the English cottage gardens. They are rarely large but are full of flowers, herbs and fruit. There was almost no information or manual to be found about creating gardens with perennial edible plants. That was the main reason for me to write the book, and my publisher was immediately enthusiastic about the idea. Manual Small gardens and balconies in the city, with high walls around them, small gardens in new-build areas, there are simply many more small gardens than large gardens. My book is a guide for successfully creating a small garden, using perennial edible plants. It is as the title states: A small edible garden with perennials. Designs for garden, balcony and terrace from 6 to 66 square meters. Double pleasure You get double pleasure from edible perennials: they are often very beautiful to look at and you can pick and eat from your own garden. And all that without too much work. Easy gardening, with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. Edible plants I started the book with a list of all edible perennial plants that can grow successfully in the Netherlands. I thought there would be about 125 species. It eventually became more than 200 perennials. I have arranged them into Berries, Flowers, Fruit, Vegetables, Herbs, Onions, Wild plants and Mushrooms. Everything edible and to be grown in a small garden. I mention the growth habit, the preferred soil type, the edible part and its usability in the kitchen. Such a list has never been compiled before, not even abroad. The list is an appendix to the book and partly determines the great success of the book. A small edible garden_book Designs and inspiration The unique thing about my book is that no book has ever been published before with nice designs and inspiration for small gardens with perennial edible plants! Not even abroad, or it would have to be the book Edible Perennial Gardening by Anni Kelsey. But that book does not contain example designs and plants that are not available in the Netherlands or will not grow successfully. Small gardens, big possibilities Existing garden books are almost always about large gardens. Books about small gardens are usually full of suggestions for paving, lounge sofas and garden lighting. This is also how landscaping companies often present themselves: all hard materials that have nothing to do with gardening. And that while you can make a paradise out of small gardens where you can grow all sorts of delicious things, precisely because the conditions are sheltered! Shady conditions During the year I worked on the book, I discovered more and more that perennial edible plants are often not very picky about the type of soil. And what also makes the book so great: Perennial edible plants can often tolerate more shady conditions very well! Not the Mediterranean herbs and the fig, of course, they like a lot of sun and don't mind a bit of drought. That makes them suitable for a roof terrace. But a garden between the neighbors' fences has its limitations. In the book you can read how these limitations actually work out well for edible plants. Vegetable gardening and wild foraging The interest in edible plants is very great. This is evident from the enormous interest in vegetable gardens and wild foraging. Beautiful books have recently been published on both subjects. For a vegetable garden you need full sun. Gardens in the city and in new-build areas are rarely in full sun. Due to the shade of the neighboring houses, the garden usually only gets sun for part of the day. For vegetable gardens you also need a lot of time and patience and knowledge of growing annuals from seed. Not everyone enjoys that. In a review, a small edible garden was called the perfect book between ornamental garden and vegetable garden book. I like that. It makes wild foraging from your own land possible. Green makes healthy and happy The importance of green in our direct living environment is great. Gardeners are happy people, I read somewhere recently, because they make their own environment beautiful. Green is now almost synonymous with healthy, and that is very positive. With my book in hand, you can harvest delicious food even from the smallest outdoor space, how nice is that. I hope my readers and users will enjoy my book. Sincerely, Madelon Oostwoud
