For example, the standard sets requirements for factories regarding the use of harmful chemicals. In addition, factories are obliged to use a sustainable wastewater system and to use water and energy efficiently. GOTS also includes criteria regarding working conditions, which are based on the standards of the International Labour Organization, such as the right to freedom of association and the right to safe and healthy working conditions. The GOTS standard is applied throughout the processing chain of organic fibers. Certain recognized standards and certifications for organic farming are permitted by GOTS, after which GOTS certification begins at the first step in processing. GOTS is managed by the International Working Group (IWG), which consists of four organizations: International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN) in Germany, Soil Association (SA) in England, Organic Trade Association (OTA) in America, and the Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA). A control organization verifies compliance with the requirements. Control Union, for example, conducts inspections, and other organizations are also allowed to conduct these inspections after receiving approval from the IWG.
