Description
To be given during periods of severe cold, for an energy reserve to get through the nights.
Reduces the amount of energy spent on foraging.
No bird relies on just one food source. Birds forage everywhere and not just in your garden.
From October/November, you can start supplementing their diet with carbohydrate- and fat-rich food, to build up vital reserves of body fat. This is to survive the long, cold nights.
Suet, marrow bones, dripping, grated cheese, pork rinds, cake, and pastries also contain a lot of fat. Never give dried coconut flesh or uncooked rice as these can swell in a bird's stomach, often with fatal consequences. Always soak dried bread in water first.
If tits feed their young peanuts from the feeder in spring, the young birds will quickly die. The peanuts do not digest in the stomachs of young tits. Full stomachs make the birds feel less hungry, so the young stop begging, cool down, and eventually die. So stop feeding peanuts in spring.
Do not hang or place the food in direct sunlight; preferably place it near suitable vantage points and dense bushes. Not too close to fences or sturdy trees due to cats. A roof prevents the food from getting wet or blowing away.
