The special thing about these clay minerals is the combination of their shape and composition. They consist of many thin plates. The result is that they have a very large surface area per unit of weight. For the Bentonite clay mineral, this can be up to 800 m2 per gram, by comparison, the most common clay mineral in the Netherlands (Illite) has a maximum of 150 m2 per gram. In addition, due to their chemical composition, the clay minerals are electrically charged at the edges. This charge is always neutralized in the soil by ions. This means that clay minerals have a high ion-binding capacity. Because of these properties, clay minerals can play an important role in soil fertility. The high adsorption (binding) capacity of clay minerals has an important function. Clay minerals ensure that many ions (K, Ca, Mg, Na, NH4) and trace elements are bound and only released again when the concentration of one of these elements in the soil decreases.
