By pressing the protective cap onto the chain while using the chain tool, the chain remains securely in place. This ensures that the pin of the chain tool is always at right angles to the chain pin to be pushed out, which prevents the pin of the chain tool from breaking. Make sure that the chain tool pushes the pin out far enough to detach the link, but not so far that the pin is also pressed out of the outer plate. The chain can be slightly bent if the chain tool has pushed the pin out (almost) far enough.
