Everywhere they were inspired by nature, and they noticed how their senses were sharpened by the intense colours, the unknown sounds and the stimulating scents. Marcel's daughters knew that their father had been making cleaning products for years. One day the youngest asked: "Why does a forest always smell so nice, and do those cleaning products always smell so fake?" A simple question - but a wake-up call for Marcel. It's strange that so few cleaning products really smell good. And even stranger that the 'clean' from 'cleaning products' stops at the front door. The world is not exactly getting cleaner from most cleaning products. That had to change... Marcel got to work - a search for natural ingredients for his own soap series: Marcel's Green Soap. At first it was for fun and some bottles were made that they then used at home. But soon it got out of hand and the soap was produced in larger numbers. Marcel found a soap factory in Utrecht that wanted to produce his products with him. And together with a number of friends and former colleagues, Marcel developed a wonderful line of cleaning products, a soap series, so to speak. Every soap from Marcel promises you 3 things: it smells fantastic, it cleans wonderfully and it is 100% natural. Marcel's Green Soap is a truly Dutch start-up. The goal is to make the laundry and cleaning products shelf much more sustainable. The formulation and the packaging and ultimately also the companies behind them. This way the world will really be a clean world! Environmental information about Kitchen Cleaner Spray - Orange & Jasmine What does it mean that Marcel's Green Soap is 100% natural? The difference with regular household products lies in the type of chemicals. We use vegetable, natural biodegradable and safe chemicals in contrast to petrochemical substances, synthetic chemicals. Every Marcel's Green Soap product is free of parabens, acids, ammonia, chlorine and dye. Ingredients that can be harmful to the environment, your home or your body. Do you use animal testing during the production process? No. We absolutely do not use animals to test our products. We also know that our suppliers do not use animal testing. In addition, the products are safe to use around animals. Do you use palm and coconut ingredients? Yes. We use both palm and coconut ingredients. Our suppliers of palm and coconut oil ingredients are all Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certified sustainable palm oil suppliers. With this, we support growing sustainable palm and coconut oil products. RSPO is the only organisation that actively works on sustainable palm oil products. Parties such as the WWF, Greenpeace and Oxfam Novib are also affiliated with this organisation. But palm oil, aren't all those rainforests being cut down for that? Unfortunately, much palm oil still comes from plantations where rainforest once stood. And the soil is also depleted, causing erosion and soil degradation. The RSPO tries to counter all this. They issue certificates to palm oil plantations that produce palm oil in a sustainable way. This does not always go well, of course, especially in countries where corruption is widespread. However, Marcel believes that the solution lies in better monitoring and regulating these registrations. If palm oil is grown in a good way, that is currently the best way for nature to meet the demand for this type of oil. But wouldn't it be much better if no palm oil were used? Globally, some 40 billion litres of palm oil are produced, about 5 litres for every person in the world. Palm oil is the most effective way to produce oil. But Marcel's Green Soap also believes that you should actively continue to look for alternatives to palm oil because we desperately need the rainforests! Are Marcel's Green Soap products biodegradable? All Marcel's Green Soap products are 99% biodegradable. By biodegradable we mean that the entire product breaks down into CO2 and water within 28 days. Marcel's Green Soap products also contain salts, among other things. This is used for the pH, for dissolving dirt and also to make it a bit thicker. Salts can never be broken down into water and CO2, hence the 99%. What about the packaging? All Marcel's Green Soap packaging is made from 100% recycled plastic, also known as HDPE. Marcel's Green Soap is therefore the first brand in the Netherlands that only uses recycled plastic in its packaging and therefore does not contribute to plastic pollution. Moreover, Marcel's Green Soap bottles can be perfectly recycled again, so that new plastic is actually never needed. This is a common plastic and therefore also easy to recycle. Also, because no dye has been added to the bottle, the bottles are extra suitable for recycling. Why no plant plastics? Nowadays you can also make bottles from plants, such as sugar cane or sugar beet. The disadvantage of sugar cane is that it has to come from the other side of the world, and so it seems environmentally friendly, but the CO2 footprint is not too favourable. And once the bottle is there, it is thrown away again and there is still a plastic waste problem. That is why Marcel focuses mainly on the use of recycled plastic. What is the way to more sustainable packaging? Marcel wants everyone to only use recycled plastic, preferably the entire bottle. Every week, some 4 million cleaning product bottles are thrown away in the Netherlands. Marcel works closely with parties in the Netherlands and abroad to use plastic that has already been used as a bottle by the consumer. And not 10 or 15% like many brands, but preferably 100%. In this way, you ensure that no new raw materials need to be used. What should I do when the bottle is empty? A very friendly but also urgent request. Collect plastic separately. Marcel himself started doing this a few years ago and now realises that half of his waste consists of plastic! The bottles are made of 100 HDPE (label too), making them very good for recycling again. The bottle is then cut into small pieces, the plastic is washed and then it can be reused for a new bottle. Where is Marcel's Green Soap produced? All products are produced at a soap factory in Utrecht. This used to belong to a large company, but these large companies often supply all of Europe from 1 or 2 factories. This saves a lot of costs but is not always good for the environment because trucks just crisscross Europe. For example, a bottle of Marcel's Green Soap washing-up liquid has travelled some 80 kilometres before it is on your kitchen counter. With competitors, that is often 600 kilometres! What about Marcel's Green Soap's carbon footprint? If you want to look closely at a company's CO2 footprint, you have to look from beginning to end, called cradle to grave. Because everything is produced in the Netherlands, almost all raw materials come from the Netherlands (or Germany), there is a minimal impact on the environment in the production process. In terms of marketing, sales and administration, Marcel himself manages the company from his home office. No management teams, no international meetings, no commuting. As a result, Marcel's Green Soap is CO2 neutral from the start, because there is almost no extra emission. Marcel finds this a much better way than first emitting a lot of CO2 and then compensating for it. And what about the products for the consumer? Because Marcel's products are 99% biodegradable and the bottles contain no dye, the impact on the environment is limited and recycling is promoted. And because Marcel's products are concentrated and the scent is much more present, you ultimately often use just a little less. Hey, nobody is perfect and Marcel doesn't pretend at all that he does everything to minimise the impact on the environment. But he also tries to do his bit in his own way.
