Description
The common dolphin is a beautiful marine mammal belonging to the genus Delphinus. There are two species of common dolphins: the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis). Despite its name, the common dolphin is not the dolphin often seen in marine parks or in the television series Flipper. That honour belongs to the bottlenose dolphin. However, in the art and literature of ancient Greece and Rome, the common dolphin was a beloved subject.
