Dit is mogelijk een evolutionaire aanpassing waardoor hij gemakkelijk onder ijs kan zwemmen. Daarnaast hebben Narwallen nekwervels die verbonden zijn, net zoals die van landzoogdieren, in plaats van samengesmolten te zijn. Dit kenmerk wordt gedeeld met de beluga-walvis.
