Toen Willie Wonka klein was, droomde hij er al van chocola te maken en de hele wereld ervan te laten meegenieten.
Als jongeman gaat hij naar de wereldberoemde Galerie Gourmet, vastbesloten om de wereld hapje voor hapje te veranderen.
Maar Willie wordt gedwarsboomd door drie jaloerse chocolademakers en het ziet ernaar uit dat hij zijn hele leven moet doorbrengen in een ellendige wasserij. Om zijn droom uit te laten komen heeft hij een beetje geluk, hulp van zijn vrienden en héél veel magie nodig.
