. At birth, Haflinger foals are given a name that begins with the first letter of their sire's or dam's name. Their coat is always chestnut, and their mane and tail are lighter in color. Sometimes they have flecks or blazes as markings on their heads, but otherwise, they are always solid-colored. When mature, they have a height at the withers of 138 to 155 centimeters. Although the desired height at the withers for a horse should be at least 148 centimeters, meaning Haflingers would typically be classified as ponies, they are nevertheless considered a horse breed.
