UNIQUE IN ITS KIND, LIGHT & EXTREMELY STABLE: THE INNER TUBE REVOLUTION MADE OF AEROTHAN

Schwalbe's revolutionary new inner tube made of Aerothan achieves unprecedented top values in terms of elasticity, weight, and puncture resistance - and does so entirely without rubber. For road bikes, MTBs, and trekking bikes.

100 grams less weight on the road bike, puncture resistance for extreme touring cyclists, or tire pressure around one bar on a mountain bike without increasing the risk of punctures: what sounds tempting is now reality thanks to the new thermoplastic polyurethane called Aerothan. With the Aerothan tube, cyclists and touring riders can push the boundaries of their possibilities further than ever before. Aerothan tubes are much more robust and resistant than butyl, latex, or other plastic inner tubes.

The transparent Aerothan tube, weighing only 41 grams, is innovative through and through: For more than five years, we have perfected the material in cooperation with BASF down to the smallest detail and made groundbreaking improvements. "This is the only way we could combine the apparent contradictions of minimal weight and maximum puncture resistance," says Felix Schäfermeier, Schwalbe Product Manager.

The result exceeds all our expectations! The material, a thermoplastic polyester-polyurethane, impresses with its excellent physical properties: high resilience, unique tensile strength, excellent damping, extreme heat resistance, and maximum abrasion resistance. And of course, Aerothan tubes are also recyclable.

Aerothan tube: The new benchmark for low weight and puncture resistance

The effects of these properties in the Aerothan Tube are impressively demonstrated by comparison tests with other models. The plunger test simulates the penetration of a small object, such as granules. This is exactly what causes many punctures in practice. Here, Aerothan lasts twice as long as other materials: 47 Newtons are needed to pierce the Aerothan tube - more than twice as much as with other materials. Even in the snake bite test with a guillotine, Schwalbe's new inner tube can withstand significantly greater drop heights than butyl, latex, or other plastic inner tubes. Its heat resistance is also excellent: it has been tested at temperatures of over 150 °C at 78 km/h in a specially developed process.

When it comes to weight, Aerothan scores with its low weight, from 41 grams for road bikes to 61 grams for all-round riders to 81 grams for MTB. In the rolling resistance test, the results correspond to the traditionally fast latex inner tubes and tubeless systems.

The extraordinary dimensional stability of the material offers even more advantages. Aerothan inner tubes do not burst suddenly, but the air escapes slowly in the event of a defect. Even with extremely low air pressure, the shape and stability of riding remain stable. This reduces the chance of punctures or burping. And: assembly is much easier: the inner tube does not slip and cannot get pinched.

Incomparable riding experience

"Despite the high surface tension, the reset property is excellent and ensures a smooth yet dynamic and precise riding experience that I have never experienced before," says Felix Schäfermeier, a former professional rider himself, about the incomparable riding experience. The inner tube fits so smoothly and snugly to the tire, as if it were part of it.

Like all Schwalbe products, the new inner tube was not only made in the laboratory but also perfected through thousands of test rides. Professional riders, triathletes, World Cup mountain bikers, and world cyclists provided valuable feedback for the developers.

Including Patrick Lange, Ironman Hawaii World Champion 2017 and 2018. His conclusion: Aerothan is my first choice. On the one hand, because 100 grams per set of tires can be saved compared to conventional inner tubes.
